Sound Energy

In this unit, we talked about sound energy. I introduced the idea of sound energy to the students by having them watch a video of a man shattering a glass with his voice, and then asking them the question, “Why was the singer able to shatter the glass?” Then, the students drew a model that expressed their thinking. Throughout the unit, the students learned about the vibrations that create sound (by feeling their vocal cords), how we measure sound (by using a decibel meter and air horn), what sound waves look like (by using a pan of water and tuning forks), what matter is made up of (by knocking on their desks), and how two objects that have the same frequency can make each other vibrate without even touching (by using a cellophane covered bowl with salt on the top and a tuning fork). After each lesson, we connected the scientific concepts we learned to the singer shattering the glass.
